Every major production run of the Diplomacy board game has come with a change to the appearance of the pieces or units. Everything from wooden blocks to plastic anchors to painted pewter figurines have been used. The pieces you use will likely be determined by which ones came with the set you bought. They're all functionally identical, and preferences are as varied as the options. So long as you can tell the armies from the fleets in your set everything will be fine. I'll use cannons for armies and boats for fleets for the remainder of this tutorial.
