The Diplomacy board is modeled after the political map of pre-World War I Europe. It is divided into 76 named provinces. Thirty-four of these provinces have a black dot inside them. Provinces with these dots are called supply centers.
All provinces are either ocean provinces or land provinces. However, the
land provinces are further subdivided into two more categories. A land province
may be either a coastal province or an inland province. Coastal provinces are
adjacent to ocean provinces. Inland provinces are not. Switzerland is a
special case in that it is impassable -- it may never be entered or owned.
