That's how it's almost always done.   In part because folks don't want
their global ranking affecting how they're treated in a specific game
and also to make things like "no talking after the deadline is up" rule
enforceable.  If you knew who was playing France and could email them
directly then there'd be no way to make you stop talking when time is up
(whereas in a FTF game we'd just tackle you). :)

Writing styles do become apparent (hint I'm the only person who still
uses semi-colons), but so long as no one accidentally signs an email w/
their real name you're never totally sure.
