Yes! Immortalized! ;-)
Some after-game thoughts. Zack, I will never ask to see a player's
order card ever again, nor will I ever show my own. At the time I
thought it a good move in trying to guarantee the agreed-upon
alliance, but now I feel I was just "bullying" you around. I'm sure
you noticed that once we started refusing to show each other our
orders, it was a "tell" that a double-cross was about to happen. I do
enjoy the multiple-order card trick, though I'll remember to write
VOID on any orders I don't want taken seriously. *grin*
I spent a little time last night browsing articles at
http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/ and ran across "Unethical Practices
in FtF Diplomacy" by Jared Johnson. [1]_ He states:
"These practices may be termed legal according to a strict
interpretation of the rules, and yet their use I have often
found to greatly annoy a number of players including myself.
There are a number of things a player may do during a
Diplomacy game, among which are the following:
(1) Let another player watch him write his orders or see the
finished orders before everyone's orders are exposed, so as to
make sure he is conforming with the terms of an alliance or
bargain.
..."
So, there you go. I should be ashamed of myself. ;-) In any case,
lesson learned. I also think it would be a good idea to agree upon a
time-limit to the game from the outset. That way, the winners of the
game don't end up being those that stay the longest. Don't worry, I
don't feel bad about leaving the game early. As I see it, this was a
for-fun game, and I did have fun.
Have a great week!
Chad
