Hi, Chad, I'm glad to see this list coming alive too. Here's the
mn-dip backstory in case anyone's wondering why we have a list with 46
members and still never actually play Diplomacy.
I've been playing dip for going on 15 years and have travelled to many
of the world championships (at which I invariably get my ass handed to
me). I moved to MN and started trying to get games going in 2002.
Over the next year or so we kept adding to the mailing list and trying
to organize a game each month. We'd almost always get seven players
signed up to come play and then one ore more of the following would
happen:
1) someone would be an hour late
2) someone wouldn't show up at all
3) right after we started someone would announce they had to leave
in two hours
We'd almost always still have a game, but never a full game.
We tried various schemes of alternates, incentives, and dis-incentives
but never got more than a few hours with six or fewer players. Eventually
everyone got discouraged and we let the schedule atrophy.
If now we can find seven people willing and able to commit to playing a
game that usually lasts a minimum of six hours and who then (and this is
the tricky part) actually do show up to do so, I'd be amazed and
thrilled.
As for the location Tom is suggesting someone's home mostly, I think,
because our previous games at the source would run into opening and
closing time limitations and other problems. Rather than playing in
someone's home I think the solution is to rent a hotel meeting room or
other event space, which I'd be happy to do. Alternately classrooms and
meeting rooms on the U of MN campus can be reserved and provide good
amenities and no time restrictions once you're in.

Looks like it was the postfix style chewie+mn-dip at wookimus.net rather
than the qmail style chewie-mn-dip at wookimus.net -- removed now.
