I've heard no dissent, so it's official our next diplomacy game is
Saturday, January 25th from 11am 'till 5pm. Location is TBA but will
likely be a public room in a library or game shop in the Twin Cities
Metro area. I will be handling the reservation of said space and should
Have details soon.

The reservation system will be handled as discussed on this list and in
rec.games.diplomacy and largely designed by Jim Swift. Here I'm
summarizing some of his observations, thoughts, and the results of
public discussion in rec.games.diplomacy.

    - It is often the case that people say they will attend when they
are, in fact, not sure they will

    - It is often the case that these people do not attend but let no
one know until the last minute

    - It is often the case that people who would have played are turned
away believing the game is full

    - It is often the case that once a game has a vacancy many more
don't attend because they believe the game will not take place

The proposed solution is two-fold:

    - Allow advance reservations, but tie them both to a perk and a
      penalty
    - Assure people that a game will take place no matter how many have
      pre-registered or cancelled

The perk/penalty as discussed on the mn-dip mailing list are as follows:

    - Perk: Players may select the power they will play in the order
      registered
    - Penalty: Players registering and then cancelling/no-showing must
pay a $20 fine . This fine will be payed to a charity to be
selected by those who do attend, and a receipt for the
donation/fine must be shown before the player is elligable to play
      in any future games.

SO IN SUMMARY, if you want to play Diplomacy on January 25th and think
you're sure enough about that to give $20 to charity if you don't, say
so on this list and you'll be commited/registered. If you think you
want to play, but aren't willing to wager $20 on it (and thus don't get
to select your power) just show up. Those in the non-registered/maybe
column can free free to say they _might_ come, but don't say you will
come or you're registered.

Current status and a recap can be found here:

P.S. I will be certainly playing, but will wait to announce that so that
someone else gets fair chance at first power-pick.
